S60 2-door Crown Super Saloons (SUPER SALOON! YOU CANNOT BEAT THAT NAME!) are one of my all-time favorite automotive loves. They may not have the World's Greatest Butt™ like you get on a Crown Wagon of similar vintage, but you still get that super-rad front end, with the too-cool-be-the-afterthought-it-probably-was vent on the hood, this time paired with a very, very sexy coupe roofline.

These cars are relatively rare and cool as all get out, but they're not something people actually want. Face it, most people when looking for an early 70s Japanese big coupe, are going to go for either a Skyline or a Laurel. This means Crowns are cheap. Like real cheap. This is a gorgeous, super-clean example with only 56,000 kms on the clock, sold at Takeey's, a vintage car dealer with the kind of reputation that lets them get away with marking everything up as much as they feel like, and it's going for a mere 12 grand.

What does that 12 grand get you? A lumpen M-C engine (2 liters, 6 cylinders, and a yawning 105 horsepower), a 5-speed Aisin gearbox, THAT BODY, a blue (blue!) interior and a Mooneyes horizontal-sweep aftermarket tach. It would be a shame to yank such a low-milage engine out of there, even if it sucks, but seriously, imagine this with a 2JZ-GE, a 6-speed and a set of Hayashi streets. Please, folks, stop transforming into a dragon.

It's also worth noting that pretty much every generation of Crown has a huge following in Japan, thanks to people like Crown Classics, and the aftermarket for these has a really distinct, unique American street rod vibe. I've seen more custom crowns with ghost flames and Torq-Thrusts than I can count.

It's awesome. Did we get the two-door here in the States? I know I've seen a few sedans of that body style at classic Japanese shows.

We didn't, sadly. When this generation debuted, it was replaced in North America by the Corona Mark II. Which is also sexy, just not quite as.
